Wine Escape 🍷 Hell's Kitchen, NYC 🍎
Tucked away on quiet 44th street, just west of bustling 9th avenue, sits a little sliver of heaven called Wine Escape. Blink, and you'll miss it.
If you're familiar with dining and drinking in Hell’s Kitchen, then you're probably accustomed to cramped quarters, but the word 'intimate' is perhaps more appropriately applied to Wine Escape. A single, friendly bartender is the only staff that the small space can accommodate. The bar seats about 10, and you’ll find table seating in the back for about 14 people.
At Wine Escape you’ll find bottles from around the globe paired with a thoughtful selection of charcuterie, cheese, and tapas. I highly recommend the meatballs.
Why do I love it so much?
First, it's ACTUALLY a wine bar -- unlike its restaurant neighbors that are really only masquerading as wine bars for the posh factor. If you prefer to enjoy your wine at a table rather than the bar, you are not required to order a pricy meal.
Second, it’s unpretentious, yet so very, very NYC. If you live here, you’ll understand exactly what I’m talking about, and if you’re visiting, you’ll see what I mean.
Third, they allow and encourage their patrons to sample their selection of wines before making a selection. I realize that this isn’t completely outside the norm, but there is something especially relaxed and enjoyable about this process at Wine Escape. The bartender is there to help, rather than rush you into your choice.
It might not be the best option for groups larger than 4, as table seating in the back is extremely limited, but I highly recommend it for a date night or a quiet catchup with a friend. If you're looking for the perfect spot for a first date, but not ready to commit to a full dinner, look no further.
