Lokvarsko lake
Lokvarsko Lake is an artificial lake in Gorski Kotar created by the construction of a dam on the Lokvarka River in 1954. The depth of the lake is 40 m and its surface is about 2.5 km2.
The importance of Lokvarsko Lake is that it is part of the hydroelectric system (HES) Vinodol, which, due to the large difference in available falls (about 650 meters), is one of the largest falls in hydropower plants in Europe.
Although Lokvarsko Lake is an artificial lake, it perfectly blends with the landscape of coniferous forests. This is the reason why this lake is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Croatia for sports and recreation lovers, but also for those who prefer just easy walks around the lake in untouched nature. The lake is surrounded by a long forest path, so those who want to get to know the lake and its surroundings can do so by bicycle or on foot.
Lokvarsko Lake is known for organising the first underwater orientation world championship, and one of the interesting facts is that in 1968 the largest brown trout in the world, weighing 24.5 kg and 124 cm long, was caught there. The lake is rich in chub, carp, trout and other fish so it's a favourite spot for fishing lovers. Despite the large quantity of fish not very small in size, the lake is quite safe for swimmers.
Therefore, whether you are fond of fishing, swimming or sporting activities such as hiking and biking, if you enjoy boating or prefer to paddle on the water, Lokvarsko Lake will not disappoint you.
