Eastern Bali
The mighty Agung and stunning rice fields!
Bali is very famous; especially the south-west coastal area and the southern peninsula. Bali has so much more to offer though. One of the lesser known parts is the eastern part of the island. There are several hotspots around this area that make it very diverse.
The best part of east Bali is of course mount Agung. Everywhere you go, this massive volcano forms a beautiful background. The area around the volcano is very fertile, and therefore very green and beautiful. We made a little road trip around this area to visit some temples.
We loved the road tripping itself maybe even more though; just driving and enjoying the surroundings. Ricefields and little farms everywhere. Bali is very busy and touristic, but this rural part is more quiet, and you get more an idea of the “real" Bali.
As said we visited different temples, whereof we visited the Lempuyang Temple mainly for the views. This temple is higher on a hill, giving some nice views of the area. Some iconic temple gates give a beautiful picture, especially with Mount Agung as an impressive backdrop.
Furthermore we visited two waterpalaces, among which the popular temple Tirtagangga. This palace is a maze of pools and fountains surrounded by a beautiful garden, giving a good impression of Hindu Balinese style.
As said, the area had amazing views of rice fields, especially with Mount Agung in the background. One of the viewpoints in this area is getting more and more popular. In the middle of nowhere, just upon a small hill, you can enjoy a stretched out area of rice fields, with some palmtrees here and there, and of course Agung on the horizon. A painting. Really.
After a lot of driving and walking around, we went to Amed, a small town on the eastern coast, to just relax at the beach. This place is famous for snorkeling and some interesting diving spots, such as a sunken ship. We just snorkeled a bit, enjoyed the beach and some bintang with, yes again, a view of mount Agung.
