Fenghuang Ancient Town

Like we told in our other stories, to be blown away by beautiful landscapes, China is a a fantastic country to visit. But when we travel, we always like to combine nature with culture, and try to visit some city’s or villages along the way. Therefore, we also visited Fenghuang, a little town with a history of over 400 years, where it seems like time has stood still. Besides a more modern part of the city, the ancient town had over 20 ancient lanes and over 200 ancient residences. You will get a peak of what ancient China must have looked like, before the modernization and the construction of huge buildings. And it is fantastic!

Along the river

You can just walk around town through little alleys and along the river, and be impressed by all the charming wooden houses. It is also possible to take a little boat trip, to get a better look at the houses from the water. In our opinion this is all a bit touristic. The view from shore, with the boats in front of the houses, is more scenic anyway. Be prepared for a lot of Chinese tourists out here as well though; the Chinese really love the ancient towns.

If you decide to visit this town, at least stay for one night, so you can also see how the houses are lit up when it gets dark. Especially the houses along the river create a beautiful scene, as their lights are mirrored in the water. You might not expect it, but Fenghuang is also known for its nightlife. In combination with the lights, cafe’s along the river also turn op their music!

Boat trips in Fenghuang

We combined the visit of this cute town when we traveled to Zhangjiajie, a beautiful national park just a busride of five hours away (you can read more about this beautiful park in a previous blog). Let yourself be amazed by the charm of this town and catch a party, before you head up to your next destination!
