By no means am I the sort of person who always seeks out Michelin star restaurants and 5* bars with an incredibly overpriced cocktail menu. I am a sucker for a good underground dive bar that isn’t on anyone's radar or a small family run restaurant where the homely food and personal service keeps people coming back. However, I can’t deny that sometimes that touch of elegance and sophistication is grand, a place that offers sparkle and luxury. On our visit to New York we managed to get the balance just right, and saw and experienced the city through various different perspectives. From the lavish Upper East Side to the uninhibited West Side and East Village, the area that I like to compare to Soho in London, really edgy with an Indie vibe that makes for a great night out.
Prior to our New York trip I did a little research, one of the requirements was a good rooftop bar that has stunning views across the city. We actually went to a couple in the end, but the first one we ventured to was Skylark. It wasn’t a rooftop bar as such as it was predominately inside with the main lounge, living room, pool room and they boast a chic roof deck that overlooks the empire state building.
If you have an appreciation for interior design like me then it is a must visit, the photos don’t really do it any justice. Beautifully elegant and stylish, it was the perfect place to have a martini and get comfy on their plush window seating. Great vibe with subtle music playing in the background with impressive barmen showing off their cocktail making skills.
I would highly recommend booking for when it is the sunset as you have a prime view to watch the sun go down behind the New York skyline. I will be going back on my next visit to the city! They do ‘dinner by the bite’ so it is ideal if you only want a few picky things to eat whilst you sip your cocktails. It is the perfect place to have a romantic night with your loved one, and a cool and glamorous place to relax with your group of girlfriends.
