Christ the Redeemer Among the Clouds
My Heli Trip to See Christ the Redeemer
Perspective. It’s something that I put a lot of time and effort into whenever I plan a trip. After all, changing the way you look at something can redefine the entire experience. So when planning my trip to the statue Christ the Redeemer, I knew I wanted to do something to elevate the experience.
The traditional way to take in the statue is to hike up to its base, along with the crowds of other first-timers looking to get a glimpse. I don’t mind hiking, but hiking up a mountain in a tropical climate, surrounded by hundreds of people don’t really give a sense of wonder. I wanted to get a sense of exclusivity. I wanted to see Christ the Redeemer from the air.
So I booked a tour with Heli Sun Helicopter that allowed me to do just that. I’m a big fan of aerial views of famous locations, but I can honestly say nothing has come close to the view I got in Brazil.
The first thing you see after taking off is Copacabana Beach.
As you climb higher, you begin to see the multicolored favelas tucked away into the mountainside.
Then, finally, Christ the Redeemer. The sheer size of it was incredible, holding its own against this backdrop of green mountains. And because it was hazy, it actually looked like Christ was peeking through the clouds.
The helicopter did a couple of passes and the pilot let me dangle my feet out of the side. Sitting there, surrounded by Brazilian sky and sea on both sides, looking down at the head of Christ, it felt like I was floating. Truly an unforgettable experience.
After a day in the air we decided to put our feet in the sand and the infamous Copacabana Beach. Was the perfect end to the perfect afternoon.
Obrigado Brasil! and Boas férias leitores!
