Camping at Piñon Flats

Where to stay in Great Sand Dunes National Park

Piñon Flats campground is located one mile north of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Visitor Centre. It’s open from April 1st through to October 30th. During both April and October, individual campsites are first-come, first-served. For the rest of the year you’ll need to reserve a spot at recreation.gov.

We stayed at site 031 on Loop 1, with incredible views of High Dune and situated only a few steps away from the dunes trail, it had everything we needed. The only issue we found was the lack of shade in the midday sun. A few of the other sites did have some tree coverage. There are photos of every site at recreation.gov, so you can try and find a spot with shade, if it’s still available.

Staying in a tent has it's perks! You get a fire grate and picnic table at every site in Piñon Flats campground. As well as restrooms with sinks, flush toilets, dishwashing sink, and water in all three loops.
