Living in Brunei

A ‘leaving’ story

My husband and I have lived in Brunei for almost 5 years. It will be exactly 5 years in January 2020, when we’ll be leaving on our next adventure to another destination.

Brunei Darussalam, meaning ‘Abode of Peace’, truly lives up to its name. The country is small with a population of only 450,000 people. The main industry is oil and gas. The citizens are given free medical, have no interest fees and there are no taxes. The infrastructure is basic but so is the lifestyle. Life here is easy going and the people are very friendly.

Unlike Malaysia and Indonesia that surrounds it, Brunei boasts some of the richest prime rainforests on Borneo. They have preserved their forests rather than cutting and burning them to make way for palm plantations.

There is an eco lodge (https://www.uluuluresort.com ) in Temburong where one can visit and truly experience time spent in the depth of the borneo rainforest! Unfortunately, Brunei does receive the haze at certain times created by the fires to the south.

The wildlife in our backyard has been spectacular !

In these 5 years we have discovered the joy of mountain biking and have traveled extensively throughout SE Asia on multiple mountain biking trips. Mr. Grey has competed in the Asian Enduro Series ranging from Nepal, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Chiang Mai, and Brunei, finishing in 10th place overall in his age category.

I have completed my 500-hour yoga teacher certification, SUP yoga certification, yin yoga certification, children’s yoga certification, become a certified personal trainer and a certified nutrition specialist. And I have been fortunate to be able to put my skills into practice in my community.

We will miss Brunei!
