Phuket Beach by Beach: Where to Actually Stay

Twenty minutes on this island can take you from bucket-list nightlife to a beach where your only company is a longtail boat. That is the thing nobody tells you about Phuket: it is not one place. Picking your beach IS picking your holiday. I live here, so here is my honest shortlist, north to south.

MAI KHAO and NAI YANG, up by the airport, are for people who want the ocean to themselves: eleven kilometres of national-park sand, sea turtles still nesting, beach restaurants with plastic chairs and perfect fish. NAI THON, one bay south, is the west coast's best-kept secret — a single street, a kilometre of clear water, snorkelling off the rocks.

LAYAN is my home beach and the one I recommend to friends who ask where to base themselves for a month. It is the quiet northern end of Bang Tao bay, next to Sirinat National Park: casuarina shade, longtails at the lagoon mouth, and the best sunsets on the island — the photo on this story is the view I mean. Ten minutes away, BANG TAO proper has the island's best food scene around Boat Avenue, beach clubs, and eight kilometres of sand that never feels crowded.

SURIN is small, calm and quietly expensive — 800 metres of white sand with no clubs and no noise. KAMALA next door is the family compromise: a two-kilometre bay, village pace, and Patong's everything ten minutes over the hill. PATONG itself you already know from the postcards — go for the energy, the shopping and the food, stay elsewhere if you value sleep.

South of it, KARON's three kilometres of squeaky sand suit families who want space, and KATA is the liveliest small resort town on the coast — surf schools in the green season, calm family sea in winter. Right at the bottom, NAI HARN keeps winning "best beach in Phuket" polls for a reason: turquoise water, green hills, a freshwater lake behind the sand and not a high-rise in sight.

My rule of thumb: party — Patong; families — Karon, Kamala or Bang Tao; silence — Nai Thon or Mai Khao; the balance of all three — Layan.
