Made famous by the late, great, Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo is a vast animal park known especially for its magnificent Saltwater Crocodiles. The zoo is owned and run by the Irwin family and honours Steve at every turn.
Far from small, oppressive cages, the zoo features large habitats and focuses on conservation and protection. The huge crocs who live at the zoo have been removed from the wild for their own good after being identified as a problem. Humans encroaching on crocodile territory in Queensland creates a situation of risk in which alpha crocs may attack fishing boats or farm animals. The world is aware of Steve Irwin’s - aka Crocodile Hunter - work in this field and Australia Zoo pays great homage to that.
The zoo puts on regular shows around the park to educate visitors and the 5000 seat ‘Crocoseum’ is an impressive, large amphitheatre where visitors can witness incredible displays and learn more about birds and crocs.
Tickets include a ‘sneak peak’ into the onsite animal hospital where zoo animals, domestic pets and local wildlife are treated, or you can pay extra for an in-depth tour. In particular, the hospital does great work in aiding the Australian koala population, many of which are often injured on roads. It’s here where you really appreciate the legacy of Steve Irwin and the impressive work of Australia Zoo.
