Cape Byron Lighthouse, NSW, Australia
The most easterly point of mainland Australia

Set a sunrise alarm and head to the most easterly point on the Australian mainland for unrivalled views across the Pacific Ocean. Up on the clifftops above the laid-back surfer town of Byron Bay on Australia’s East Coast, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands tall. It’s been a beacon to ships since 1901 and is the most powerful lighthouse in all of Australia.
A well signposted route offers a challenging but rewarding hike up to the lighthouse from the town, with a number of stunning beaches to admire on the way. Alternatively there’s a small carpark right under the lighthouse ($8 AUD per vehicle) if you’re unable to walk up.
Inside the lighthouse you’ll find a small exhibition detailing its history as well as a cafe serving treats, cool drinks and pretty views.
Follow the path to the tip of the headland for panoramic views out to the open ocean and watch the surfers catching waves from Wategoes beach below. As well as taking an iconic photograph with the sign, keep an eye out because we spotted two giant sea turtles playing in the surf below!
If you visit between May and November, you may even be lucky enough to catch thousands of whales migrating.
