Lake Pukaki, New Zealand
Jaw dropping glacial lake on the South Island

As Lake Pukaki comes into view as you drive alongside the Southern Alps in New Zealand’s South Island, you’ll do well not to stop suddenly in shock. It’s not the vastness of this huge glacial lake that will blow your mind but the colour. It’s so bright and so turquoise blue that you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s no way it can possibly be real!
Just in case that isn't impressive enough, Pukaki is flanked by a range of mountains with an awe-inspiring view of snow-capped Mount Cook taking centre stage.
The glacial water is, of course, incredibly cold but that doesn't stop visitors from braving a summer time swim. If you’re travelling by campervan, there’s a freedom camp right on the shores of the lake offering what must be one of the most incredible sleeping spots in the world.
Many tourists flock to nearby Lake Tekapo, leaving Pukaki (which I would argue is even more beautiful!) quieter and less frequented. From here, it’s easy to reach the base of Cook for some jaw-dropping trails and hikes.
