Pancake Rocks (Punakaiki), New Zealand

Incredibly natural rock formations and blow holes

IG: @bethsandland

The amazing Pancake Rocks on New Zealand’s Wild West coast are a natural limestone formation, drawing visitors from around the world. The ferocious seas have carved the limestone rocks in such a way that they take on the appearance of a stack of pancakes. Whilst this might take a little imagination, there is no doubt that they are a truly stunning sight and an impressive reminder of Mother Nature’s power.

Whilst the rocks are cool to see, the natural blowholes are even more impressive. The surging waves are blown through caves and fantastic flumes of water whoosh out of the top, creating a magnificent natural spectacle. If you’re lucky, they’ll even create a jaw-dropping perfect rainbow.

The area is carefully managed by the Department of Conservation and they’ve created an accessible walkway (suitable for wheelchairs and strollers), helping to guide visitors safely around the area.

There’s a DOC car park, cafe and gift shop too, including a booking office for lots of other local attractions. A definite must see in the South Island!
