Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Some 19km of the coast of Perth you’ll find Rottnest Island. It’s a true paradise, home to insanely beautiful white sand beaches, secluded coves with crystal clear water and an abundance of marine life would be enough for most. However, what really brings visitors to the island the are the ridiculously cute Quokkas. A rare breed of animal, Rottnest is the only home in the world for these cat size marsupials. Think mini wallabies crossed with a hamster!
One of the charms of the island is there are no cars and the main form of transport is by bicycle or electric bike. There is also a round-island bus service available; this is the only vehicle on the entire island. Most visitors are day trippers and accommodation is limited. The island is tranquil and calm with countless hidden bays to explore.
There are a few cafes and restaurants or you can pack a picnic and plan to spend the day basking in the Western Australian sunshine away from the small port area where the ferries come in. Don’t forget to snap that famous Quokka selfie!
