New Zealand is home to plenty of beautiful lakes but Lake Tarawera, just a short drive from Rotorua on the North Island, is usually overlooked. The main vantage point is seemingly just home to a small cafe, carpark and boat launch point. Little do most people know, it’s an incredible spot to watch a truly spectacular sunrise!
The jetty has become popular with local photographers and visitors in the know, but chances are you’ll have it all to yourself. Sit and watch or have your camera at the ready as the sky turns the most shocking shades of red and purple and the emerging sun rays reflect across the water.
If you’re travelling by campervan then the small carpark overlooking the lake is a great spot to cook up your morning breakfast after a cleansing dip in the freshwater. A few quiet fishermen may come and go but chances are nothing will spoil this slice of morning tranquility.
Later in the day the cafe opens and more people emerge to use the launch point for boats and jet skis; little will they know that you arrived extra early to catch a magic show!
