The Dragon Cave

One of the best places in Palma De Mallorca

Today I wanted to tell you about my favorite place on the island of Palma de Mallorca: the Dragon Caves. These caves are located in the city of Manacor, a few kilometers from the city of Monte Cristo. The discovery of this site dates back to 1338 when for the first time it is mentioned in epistles. The caves reach a maximum depth of 25 meters and reach 2.7 kilometers in length. There are four connecting caves called Cueva Negra, Cueva Blanca, Cave of Luis Salvador and the French Cave. Formed by the action of the water of The Mediterranean Sea that penetrates the rock and some scholars think that they can date it back to the Miocene era. These caves host a lake, the Martel lake which is very impressive at about 115 meters long and 30 meters wide. On this lake classical concerts are held daily by an orchestra placed on small boats. At the end of the visit, tourists can also cross the lake by boat. The lake takes its name from the French explorer and scientist Edouard Alfred Martel, considered the founder of speleology (the study of caves), who was sent to explore the caves in 1896 and discovered the two of the caves and the lake. The ticket costs € 20 for adults and € 14 for children aged 3 to 12. The hours of entry in the period from March to October are approximately every hour. The visit lasts about an hour and the cost shown refers to the purchase of the ticket on site. If you do not have a car available you can reach the caves via organized tours that include transportation from the City of Palma de Mallorca. The temperature and humidity inside the site are very high and there is a lot of walking so I recommend comfortable and fresh clothing and comfy shoes.
