The Hamptons

A 365 Day Culinary Mecca

The Surf Lodge, Montauk

Stretching across the eastern most southern point of Long Island, NY this celebrity hotspot is more than just a seasonal beachfront escape for the rich and famous. The Hamptons is culinary mecca with some of the most delicious food, with an emphasis on local ingredients, and is also the working place of some of the most talented chefs in the country.

You can visit the Hamptons any of the 365 days of the year and still be blown away by the food, whether you dine out or visit one of the many local markets for groceries. Many of the restaurants offer catering options for parties large and small, especially during the summer months when the season is in full swing.

Many restaurants are located within the hearts of East Hampton and Southampton village. I recommend parking in one of their long-term or three hour parking lots and take a stroll through the village as the towns are very strict with giving out tickets. Parking is free across the Hamptons' public parking lots, but do take note of the time you arrived to avoid a parking ticket.

In the summer, the hotbed for tourism and activity, almost every restaurant is open seven days a week. This when it is essential to call ahead and or make your dining reservations at least a day in advance. On Friday and Saturday evenings, you may expect a wait time of 90 minutes to over two years if you did not make a reservation in advance. Some restaurants, such as Sen and The Beacon in Sag Harbor, do not offer reservations so it is best to arrive right when they open or towards the latter part of the evening.

At least a dozen or so new restaurants 'pop up' exclusively for the summer season, so those are always fun to try. Season to season, the Hamptons food scene is ever evolving and if you decide to visit again, you will certainly discover many new places to eat and local food products to savor, as I do regularly.
