Rainbow Village 彩虹眷村
Taichung, Taiwan
Rainbow Village is a must see if you are visiting Taichung Taiwan. This village was painted by one man, Huang Yung-fu, a former veteran soldier.
Taiwan is full of many veteran villages which is housing that was provided to former soldiers. In recent decades, the government would provide veteran alternative housing to sell the property to other companies. Rainbow Village was one of those villages that were tearing down. Mr. Huang began painting the entire village to restore it. He used vibrant colors and characters and animals in his paintings. He painted the alleys, ground and all the houses.
Students at Ling Tung University found this village a few years ago. It started to gain attraction in the city of Taichung. The locals petitioned to keep the village from being demolished.
Mr. Huang became known as, Rainbow Grandpa. He stills lives in this village so please be respectful when you visit. Rainbow Village is quite small so you can easily spend 20 minutes there. Rainbow Village is worth visiting to see these surreal and whimsical paintings.
Rainbow Village is free to visit but donations are accepted. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase hand-made souvenirs (cash only).
I spent my time walking through the village countless times and appreciate the art that was created by an older gentleman. Rainbow Grandpa proves that you can make an impact regardless of your age.
