Northern Portugal
The Douro region is without a doubt one of the most beautiful regions in Portugal. It is cut by canyons, green terraces, and covered with vineyards. The Douro River runs through this enchanted region as well.
In this region, grapes have been grown in sloping mountains for over 200 years. It has given birth to one of the most appreciated wines in the world: the famous Port wine.
Some places that are worthy to be in your itinerary through the Douro region are Peso da Régua where the Douro Museum is located, Pinhão which has a beautiful train station, and the beautiful viewpoints in São Leonardo da Galafura and Casal de Loivos.
Aside from enjoying the fantastic Douro landscape, be sure to visit one of the region's famous wine estates. Furthermore, take the N222 Road which is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
A wine estate suggestion is Quinta do Bomfim which was voted one of the best wine estates in the world. In 2014, one of their wines was voted the best in the world! You can walk around some of the wonderful vineyards after visiting the winery, the old cellar, and doing a wine tasting.
