The Mackay Region

The best thing about road tripping is you can travel from one place to another in a relatively short time. And 'that's what we did when we explored the Mackay region, in central Queensland, couple of hours driving from Rockhampton City.

Eungella National Park

We jumped from Mackay city into the endless fields of sugarcane that run through the Pioneer Valley up into the Eungella National Park.

It is a magnificent landscape of waterfalls, rainforests, volcanic rocks, and fresh swimming holes where you can get a glimpse of the rare platypus swimming in the creek. We spent our day in Finch Hatton Gorge, the eastern part of the park. From there, a 4km trail leads us to two beautiful waterfalls called Araluen falls and the Wheel of fire. The Wheel of Fire is named for the Queensland trees situated along the walking track.

After diving in the freshwater and taking millions of pictures, we found our way to Cape Hillsborough National Park, on the coast. We discovered another Queensland gem, this time, on the ocean.

The park is very well known because every morning when the sun rises, many kangaroos gather on the beach, making that moment for the public an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, we didn't have the chance to find any available spot in the camping nearby to pass the night, but we enjoyed the park anyway and hiked to the top to look out over the ocean.
