Journey Through the Enchanting Chopta Trek
I am always on the lookout for scenic trails that offer a perfect mix of adventure and natural beauty.

Why I Chose the Chopta Trek – The Desire to Witness the Mini Switzerland of India
As an avid trekker, I am always on the lookout for scenic trails that offer a perfect mix of adventure and natural beauty. When I first heard about the Chopta Trek, often called the Mini Switzerland of India, I knew it had to be my next destination. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Chopta is known for its lush green meadows, snow-covered peaks, and the ancient Tungnath temple—the highest Shiva temple in the world.
Unlike treks that require intense preparation, Chopta is an easy-to-moderate trek, making it perfect for beginners and experienced trekkers alike. It also offers stunning views of Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath peaks, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.
The idea of walking through dense forests, reaching sacred temples at high altitudes, and witnessing breathtaking sunrises over the Himalayan ranges sounded like a dream. So, with my backpack ready and excitement at its peak, I set off on this incredible journey!
Reaching the Base: Journey from Rishikesh to Chopta – A Road Trip Through the Mountains
The trek to Chopta begins with a road trip from Rishikesh to Chopta, covering around 200 km. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through dense forests, deep river valleys, and charming villages of Uttarakhand. The mighty Alaknanda River accompanied us for most of the journey, adding to the beauty of the landscape.
Upon reaching Chopta, I was immediately captivated by the serene surroundings. The fresh mountain air, the sight of towering pine and rhododendron trees, and the sound of birds chirping created a perfect Himalayan retreat. Unlike commercial hill stations, Chopta remains untouched and peaceful, making it a hidden paradise for trekkers.
The basecamp had cozy guesthouses and camping options, and as the sun set behind the snow-capped peaks, I knew this was going to be an unforgettable experience.
The Trek from Chopta to Tungnath – A Walk Through Meadows and Ancient Legends
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we started the 5 km trek to Tungnath. The trail began with a gradual ascent through dense forests, filled with the fragrance of rhododendrons and pine trees. The cool mountain breeze and the sight of the sun rising over the Himalayan peaks made the trek even more magical.
As we moved higher, the landscape changed dramatically. The trees became sparse, giving way to vast open meadows covered in golden grass and patches of snow. The trek wasn’t very difficult, but the altitude did make breathing slightly challenging. However, every step was worth it because the views were simply out of this world.
After about 3 hours of trekking, we finally reached Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world (3,680m). The temple, covered in snow, stood as a symbol of devotion and resilience, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. There was something deeply spiritual about this place—standing in front of the thousand-year-old temple, with only the mountains as witnesses, felt like stepping into another realm.
Climbing to Chandrashila – The Ultimate Reward at 13,000 Feet
While reaching Tungnath was already an incredible achievement, the real challenge awaited—the climb to Chandrashila Peak (4,000m). The final stretch was steep and covered in snow, making it the most challenging part of the trek. But as I pushed myself forward, I knew that something extraordinary awaited at the top.
And I was right. As I stood at Chandrashila’s summit, I was speechless. The 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas was unlike anything I had ever seen before. From here, I could see some of India’s tallest peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath. The sky turned golden as the sun rose, casting an ethereal glow over the snowy mountains. It was a sight that no camera could truly capture—it had to be experienced in person.
Standing at 13,000 feet, with nothing but the sky above and mountains stretching endlessly below, I felt a deep sense of peace and accomplishment.
The Descent and Return – Reflecting on an Unforgettable Experience
After spending some time soaking in the breathtaking views, we began our descent back to Chopta. While going downhill was easier, I took my time, capturing every moment and engraving the beauty of the Himalayas into my memory.
As we walked back through the meadows and forests, I couldn’t help but reflect on the spiritual and emotional impact of this journey. The simplicity of nature, the raw beauty of the mountains, and the silence of the peaks had a calming effect on my mind. I realized that treks like Chopta aren’t just about reaching the top; they’re about the journey itself—the people you meet, the stories you hear, and the peace you find within.
Back at Chopta, we celebrated our successful trek with a warm cup of tea, sitting by the campfire under a sky full of stars. It was the perfect ending to a magical adventure.
