Kheerganga Trek had been on my adventure list for a long time. Tucked away in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, this trek is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, spiritual significance, and the famous hot water springs at the summit. With my backpack ready and a thirst for adventure, I set out on a journey that would leave me spellbound.
The Route to Kheerganga: Choosing the Best Trail
Located at an altitude of 2,960 meters (9,711 feet), the trek to Kheerganga offers mesmerizing views of the snow-capped mountains, dense pine forests, and gushing waterfalls. The most common route starts from Barshaini, a small village that serves as the base camp.
There are three different trails to reach Kheerganga:
Nakthan Route – The easiest and most scenic, passing through quaint villages and apple orchards.
Kalga Route – A quieter, less crowded alternative through dense forests.
Tosh Route – The most adventurous and slightly longer trail, ideal for experienced trekkers.
We chose the Nakthan Route for its spectacular views and easy accessibility. The trail was well-marked, winding through lush greenery, charming wooden bridges, and cascading waterfalls.
The Trek Experience: A Walk Through Nature’s Paradise
The first stretch of the trek was relatively easy, allowing us to soak in the beauty of the valley. As we walked along the Parvati River, the sound of the flowing water created a peaceful rhythm that accompanied our journey. The sight of traditional Himachali houses and friendly villagers added to the charm of the experience.
As we ascended further, the trail became steeper, with rocky sections requiring careful footing. But every challenging step was rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-clad peaks, blooming rhododendrons, and the crisp mountain air. The halfway point at Rudranag Waterfall provided a perfect spot to rest and refuel.
Camping Under the Starry Sky
After an exhilarating 4-5 hour trek, we finally arrived at Kheerganga, where a vast meadow opened up before us. The natural hot water springs were a sight to behold, inviting us to take a well-deserved dip. Soaking in the warm waters, surrounded by majestic mountains and a sky full of stars, was an experience beyond words.
Camping at Kheerganga is one of the most magical parts of the trek. As the sun set behind the peaks, the valley was painted in hues of orange and pink. Sitting around a bonfire, sharing stories with fellow trekkers, and enjoying the crisp mountain air made for an unforgettable night.
Best Time to Visit and Trek Guidelines
The best time to embark on the Kheerganga Trek is from April to June and September to November, when the weather is pleasant, and the trails are accessible. Avoid trekking during peak monsoon, as the trails can be slippery and dangerous.
Trekking Permits: Required as the trek falls within a forested area; permits can be obtained at Barshaini.
Guides & Safety: Though the trail is well-marked, hiring a local guide is recommended for first-timers.
Camping Restrictions: Camping is now regulated, so check for authorized camping sites before planning your stay.
