Winter Adventure In Bohinj, Slovenia
Magic Land
How Bohinj got its name?
According to the legend, when God was giving land to its people, everyone had demands except a small group of people who quietly waited their turn. But God forgot about them. And when he realized that, he felt pity for them and decided that because they didn't insist on anything, they deserve the best and the most beautiful land he was saving for himself. And that was Bohinj land. As they call God Boh, the name fits perfectly.
Where to go in Bohinj area?
· Lake Bohinj is a must!
Lake Bohinj is a must during any season, not just winter. It is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, located in the Bohinj Valley of the Julian Alps. Mountains surrounding Bohinj Lake make it so special. Be sure to take a walk around the lake, spend some time on the docks and go near the shore to fully enjoy that beautiful view. It's a perfect place for resting your soul.
If you want to see a beautiful view of Bohinj lake from a bit higher perspective, make sure to go to Peč viewpoint. It's a bit hard to find a way to it when there's snow (especially after fresh snow falls), so be careful. It will take about 20-30 minutes to the top because the snow makes it harder, but the view is worth it!
Vodnikov viewpoint also has a fantastic view of Lake Bohinj and the valley.
· Don't forget Savica waterfall while in Bohinj!
The magnificent Savica Waterfall is a must-see for everyone who is visiting Bohinj for the first time. This is a unique waterfall as its watercourse is divided into two parts in the hidden undergrounds. The famous A-shaped waterfall comes typically into sight at an altitude of 836 m and is 78 m high. When we were here, the more upper part was completely frozen.
Also, there are little gates that stop you from going to the waterfall as the ground is slippery. But we went anyway. We were going through deep snow, climbed some rocks and there we were. I felt the water. It was so cold but refreshing. We spent an hour down there. It was amazing being so close to it. Moments like that are my favorite. And the little part of the waterfall didn't seem so small once we came close to it.
Trip duration to the waterfall is about 25 minutes. Hiking to and from the waterfall is very fun when there is snow. We fell many times. So, if you're around, make sure to visit. You won't regret it, trust me. ;)
· Mostnica gorge – you won't get far without the right equipment
Mostnica gorge is a fantastic place in Slovenia. White cover in combination with clear blue water - stunning. Unfortunately, it's not approachable on foot in winter as snow is too deep. At least not if you don't have the right equipment. That's why we couldn’t see all those fantastic waterfalls. But if you have time, I would still recommend coming here and see that little part of Mostnica that you can. On one part, you can come close to the river and jump on huge rocks and enjoy the peacefulness of nature in winter. The only thing you'll hear is the gurgle of the river. And who wouldn't enjoy that?
Winter activities in Bohinj
