One Day in Wellington New Zealand
Fun things to do as a family in Wellington
We took a road trip through New Zealand’s North Island and loved spending the day in Wellington.
This beautiful coastal city is so family friendly. Our favorite thing was riding the Wellington Cable Car. The short and inexpensive ride takes you to the top of Mount Victoria
Once you’re at the top of Mount Victoria, there is a free museum and observatory that you can visit. You can then ride the cable car back down, but I would highly recommend walking down the trail through the botanic gardens that are terraced alongside the mountain. Be sure to stop at the playground and interactive Treehouse Visitor’s Center as well.
Another highlight was a visit to Te Papa, New Zealand’s National Museum. We were anxious to view the world’s largest colossal squid that is on display here. It’s a fantastic museum and entrance is free.
We explored around downtown and fell in love with Cuba Street. This outdoor pedestrian mall is home to an eclectic mix of cafes, shops, and boutiques. The street is lined with colorful buildings and is considered to be one of the coolest streets in New Zealand.
Frank Kitts Park is a great place to let the kids burn off some energy. The Waterfront offers plenty of outdoor family activities like renting kayaks or bikes. Take a swim at Oriental Bay or try some feijoa flavored gelato from Gelissimo.
Our last stop was at Otari-Wilton’s Bush. We took the canopy walkway high above the trees. The kids loved getting a birds-eye view of the forest.
We had such a memorable day in Wellington and hope to make it back again someday!
