South Island New Zealand Hidden Gems

New Zealand’s South Island is filled with some incredible spots. Here are some of our favorite lesser known hidden gems, like the Waipara River Boys Brigade. This is a favorite swimming hole among locals and you won’t find crowds of tourists here!

The Little River Campground is a quirky and unique camping experience. The highlights include sliding down the “Scary Slippery Slide” and watching movies under the stars. You’ll find all sorts of whimsical details around the campground, like the old piano hidden in the woods.

Castle Hill is the perfect example of Mother Nature’s playground. With massive outcrops of rocks, this is the perfect spot to play hide and go seek!

Lake Ruataniwha is a beautiful secluded lake with vibrant turquoise water. You’ll also find a vintage water slide and even a playground made of retired old school McDonald’s Playland equipment like the Hamburgler Jail!

The Omarama Clay Cliffs are not what you imagine when you think of New Zealand. These unique pinnacles were formed by glaciers over a million years ago and are a fascinating place to hike around and explore.

The Katiki Point lighthouse is in a more remote region of New Zealand but is worth is stop. If you visit at sunset you’ll see sea lions and penguins coming on shore after a long day of fishing. It is spectacular!

If you drive through Fairlie and Geraldine in the late spring or early summer months you’ll discover rolling fields of golden yellow canola blooms. It seems that everywhere you turn there is beauty just waiting to discover!
