Old Town Pollenca
Day trip 20 minutes out
During our trip we stayed in the Port of Pollensa on the coast, however our hosts (my in laws) insisted that we see the Old Town. Pollensa Old Town founded by the Catalans in the 13th century around 6km from the coast in order to avoid Pirate attacks, is without any doubt one of the most attractive and beautiful areas of the island.
Full of people doing what the Spaniards do best...relaxing, we were in heaven.
We spent the day lounging at cafes, shopping at all the small shops, drinking wine and eating tapas at the hole in the wall spots along the way. The only way to navigate is to just get lost! Which is exactly how we love to spend our vacations.
You could spend the whole day here and thats exactly what we did. Pollensa is considered to be quite glamourous so you will see people dressed the part with their wide hats and chic summer wear. Along with HUNDREDS of tourists :)
We started with just wandering the shops before lunch time and since they are renowned for their ceramics here in Spain we were determined to get some things to take home. We ended our spree with some ceramic bowls, tiles to use for coasters and hand crafted cups for coffee :)
During the day, the cobblestone town is a foodie destination with a superb delicatessen and pastry shop where locals and visitors alike stock up with watermelons as big as a bull's head and tiny sweet olives from nearby groves. But the thing to do in Pollensa is climb the steps that lead from Calvari square up to Calvário Chapel. Be warned, there are 365 steps, one for each day of the year, but the view from the top is magnificent.
This place looks like something from a Disney Movie. Its a no brainer next time youre in Mallorca!!! I have traveled ALOT and this is by far my top three fave places/trips.
