Salamanca Market, Hobart, Tasmania
The Best of Hobarts Local Goodies
As I was planning my first trip to Hobart in Tasmania I knew that food was going to play a huge part. Tasmania is known for having some of the cleanest air in the world, a bounty of seafood, artisan producers and a diverse array of growers and farmers. One of the best ways to seek out these foods and to learn the stories behind the produce is to head out to a farmers market.
With so much on display I have to admit we did skip past a number of the stall. That were selling items rather than food. Because although it was overall locally made and excellent quality, I just don’t need more stuff. My favorite part was the oyster stand where they shuck fresh oysters for you and I swear they were the size of my hand!
The best known market in Tasmania and the largest with up to 300 stall holders setting up each weekend is Salamanca market. This market sets up between the historic sandstone warehouses on Salamanca Place and the boats moored at the waterfront piers.
Tasmania is really well known for it's lavender! The Bridestowe Lavender Estate is a lavender farm located in Nabowla, Tasmania, Australia and the farm is believed to be the largest commercial plantation of Lavandula angustifolia in the world! So if you're ever here you HAVE to take some home even if its for a gift :)
