The Travel Bug // pt.2
Thailand+Cambodia // 2017
If you read my last post about my first ever solo travel experience doing an internship on an island in Thailand, then you’ll have a bit of back story on my overall feelings toward Asia at this point! I absolutely loved the experience I gained from being abroad for a longer period of time and it was actually in continuation of my internship that I feel the need to write a pt. 2 about this story! I rounded off the last post talking about how my best friend came to visit me and that because of this I felt more like I had found home in Asia as I was showing him around all my favorite spots i had seen so far!
This all continued and got so much more intense in the following 3 weeks. At the point of my friends arrival I had done 3 months of work and holiday I would say! It was long tough hours, but I learned so much about culture and ethics in doing this because of the unusual work environment I found myself in relative to the norm in Europe! After my friend and I had spent a week on Koh Tao, the island on which I completed my 3 months, we travelled together for 3 weeks and it was insane! I had already been blown away by the sheer beauty of the places I had seen up to this point, but it was all within the gulf of Thailand. Over the course of the next few weeks we went to some Incredible places in and around Koh Phangan, Koh Lanta, Phang Nga Bay, Krabi and Bangkok!
Those few weeks honestly pushed me even further over the edge of being fully addicted to travelling and there was no way back. The things we saw and experienced, the people we met, the memories that were made, the list goes on, it all ties into the full travel experience and it was something that just couldn’t be felt back “home”. I felt like being on the road without any concrete plan, and at the mercy of another country’s and culture’s rules and mannerisms, taught me so much more about life and the true values we should look for and bring out in ourselves, than any form of traditional education ever had or would!
Thailand had always been a place I wanted to go, because who doesn’t want to go to Thailand right? We’ve all seen “the beach” (which I had now been to!) and a ton of other movies that featured the beauties of Thailand. Also, it was one of the earlier adopters of western tourism in South East Asia and quickly became a hotspot for traditional tourism. Another place I had always wanted to go, after watching documentaries about it, was the Angkor Complex near Siem Reap in Cambodia. It blew me away that we were now just a short flight away and that visiting these ancient structures, which before visiting seemed just like a historical site that was too far away to ever visit, was now perfectly within travel reach! We obviously went for it, and once again, the travel bug struck HARD!
Angkor Wat was the first popular photography destination, that ever had me waking up for sunrise! We did this 3 days in a row to get some decent conditions, as we intelligently visited in rainy season of course, but it was so worth it! Little did i know back then, that my future travelling life would more or less revolve around sunrise missions the way it does now! It was the first time i felt the thrill, the let down, and the reward of truly travelling for photography. Of course visiting the entire complex was absolutely incredible, mind blowing and overall just an amazing experience - but the planning of it all to try to reach the spots before other people did and avoiding the crowds as best as possible to get the best photo conditions, that was all new to me, and I was more or less instantly hooked! It just added an extra element to the travelling which was just a massive bonus!
So there you have it, that’s the course that I took to get fully addicted to travelling. After this I returned to Denmark and finished my school year and then took off and since then I haven’t looked back! I am extremely fortunate to have family and friends who supported the decision of leaving everything else behind and going for it, and I am so grateful for that as it has helped me get to where I am today!
