Tumpak Sewu
East Java // 2018
When looking at where to go in East Java, one of it’s most insane locations which should always be on the list, is Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls. This location seems like its straight out of a hollywood set and I can guarantee that you will be blown away by it! The nearest city is Malang and it can be accessed quite easily from Surabaya Airport. Alternatively if you are coming from Bali and would rather not fly, you can get the ferry over and hire a driver to take you around to several spots on one trip.
A popular itinerary includes Tumpak Sewu, Mt Bromo Volcano Site and Ijen Volcano – all 3 are spectacular and its honestly hard to believe your own eyes when you see these locations! Tumpak Sewu is one of the most incredible natural locations I have ever been to, and its not hard to imagine why! When you first park at the site parking lot, its hard to imagine something of such scale would be just a short trek away! It looks like it’s a massive crater in the middle of a tropical forest
You can hike down to the bottom of this and really feel like youre being absorbed by the indonesian nature, and this will take about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours all depending on how fast and experienced you are with hiking! Make sure to bring shoes that can get wet, because they definitely will! It’s totally worth hiking down here if you have the time for it, because it really puts the grand size of it into perspective when you see how far up these falls flow!
It comes down with such intense force and from all directions, that the entire crater is completely covered in foliage because of the constant water spray in the air, which also makes it a challenge to take photos from down there because it is like a neverending rain coming from all directions, but a challenge is always good right?
If this location isnt enough on it’s own, Indonesia’s got you covered - when the weather conditions are right you can see Mt. Semeru (one of Java’s tallest volcanos) perfectly lined up with the crater waterfall! I definitely recommend visiting this place if you ever decide to go to Indonesia, even if you’re only going for a trip to Bali, this waterfall can be visited along with one or two of the other wild locations in East Java with ease in 2-3 days! Flying into Surabaya airport is typically only 40 or 50 USD and from there it’s a managable ride!
If you have any questios feel free to let me know! Happy Travelling Friends!
