Exploring Denmark

July, 2019

Klitmøller (Cold Hawaii), Denmark

This summer, my boyfriend and I decided on a staycation. We wanted to explore our own country to really see what it has to offer. To start with, we rented a car through a local car sharing service, packed our bags, mapped out a route and just drove.

We wanted to explore our own country to really see what it has to offer.

After a few days on the road, we arrived at a little town, Klitmøller, also known as Cold Hawaii. This little town is so special, like nothing else I have seen in Denmark before. It has such a deep and authentic surfers’ environment and lifestyle to it with a relaxed atmosphere and crooked beach houses. Everyone knew each other and were so welcoming, and we were even offered to learn how to surf by the owners of the place we stayed.

Surrounding Klitmøller is Thy National Park. The park is the first national park in Denmark. We drove around for hours to explore the wild nature and large sand dunes. This area is definitely one of my favourite places in Denmark, and it really made me feel like I was way further away from home than I actually was.

After spending the night in Klitmøller, and really taking it all in, we went further North. Our first stop was Råbjerg Mile, the largest sand dune in the country, and then further north to Skagen and the northernmost part of Denmark - Grenen.

While Grenen and Skagen was very touristy, we quickly fell in love with Gl. Skagen (the old city of Skagen), which is located 10 minutes outside of Skagen. We arrived in the afternoon, and grabbed dinner at a fisherman's restaurant. We went to 'Solnedgangskiosken' (the Sunset kiosk), to grab an ice cream and see the sunset, and even though the weather was windy and cold, the entire little town went there for ice cream and to see the sunset. That is truly the definition of 'hygge'. And when it's not that windy, people even start singing after the sun has set, to sing in the night.

This was the best staycation ever, and it really showed that Denmark has so much to offer.
