The High Line in NYC

A quirky elevated oasis overlooking the city

For anyone who knows me well, or even knows me only a little, you’ll know that New York holds a special place in my heart. Since a young age I have been obsessed with it, last year I was lucky enough to have visited twice and it’s safe to say it lived up to all my expectations. So as you can imagine there will be a lot of posts about everything we saw, did, ate and stayed. The first time I visited was in February with my friend Sophia for her birthday (yes she pops up in most of my posts so far!) and her Mum.

When talking about our plans for the first day The High Line was one of the first activities on our itinerary, and admittedly I’d never actually heard anything about it, so I was intrigued and wasn’t really sure what to expect. As it turned out it is a 1.45-mile-long elevated linear park situated in the west side of Manhattan in New York City. The park contains the remains of an old rail trail, we actually spotted the trail along the Chelsea Thicket (one of many sections in the park). I found it fascinating as they have built the park so naturally around it that it doesn't initially stand out to you straight away. It was slightly touching to see such a contemporary, quirky and artistic area subtly celebrate the former New York Central Railroad.

The park consists of amazing views of the city with many different areas, zones and viewing platforms such as the Chelsea Thicket, Donald Pels and Wendy Keys Gansevoort Woodland, Chelsea Market Passage, 10th Avenue Square and Overlook, just to name a few. It is bizarre being situated just above the loud hustle and bustle just below. Seeing as we went in February when it was freezing and raining it meant we couldn't witness the greenery, shrubs, and flowers in their full glory or make the most of the cool seating areas. It’s really clever how the place is designed, I envisioned myself sitting there chilling with ice cream in the summer (yes I’m going back this year so I’ll grab some Winter vs Summer pics to share!)

Despite the experience being better in the warmer months, even if you’re in New York when its the Winter I still highly recommend you visit! It was a very different and in my case unexpected addition to the trip.
