Don’t Lose Your Step! (Boston, MA)
This is the first version of a series that I’ve decided to write for each city I visit. Yesterday, I was sitting at home watching Remember the Titans (one of my favorite movies ever!) and I just craved some competition. I never played football, but I was itching to hit someone. I was missing lacrosse and the feeling of pushing yourself, so without another thought, I got up and went for a run.
About halfway through it hit me just how awesome of a city Boston is. My run took me through such a beautiful area of waterfront on the Charles River. After another mile, I paused my admiration for a second, and realized this is such a good way to see the sights in any city you find yourself in. In addition to a little feel-good music, its just you and your surroundings. I started by the Common, Boston’s big park in the heart of the city, and worked my way over to the river. I ran across the river at Massachusetts Ave. and passed by the campus of MIT. There's a ton of great structural sculptures and art to see going through there. To add a little more length to your run I’d highly recommend going through their quads and seeing even more of the school. Finally, I crossed back over Longfellow Bridge back towards downtown and hopped on a train home.
This route was almost exactly 3 miles. The breeze on the river made the run so much more enjoyable. I also really enjoyed passing over the bridges because they enabled me to see so much more of the city thats along the water front. There were great views of the Zakim Bridge and TD Garden (some pictures below), home of the Boston Celtics and Bruins. All in all, these scenic runs are something I undoubtedly will be including in my travels. I will try to find the best routes through each city I visit and report them back to you guys.
The route I described above in Boston is shown in an image below. I know a few more great areas to run through this city (as well as some I wouldn’t recommend) so if anyone wants to know of any more feel free to comment on the post or reach out to me individually! Stay hungry!
