Salzburg Christmas Markets
A festive affair in the Austrian Alps
Nothing gets you into the festive spirit quite like wandering around a frosty European Christmas market. Salzburg is one of the most quaint and the most picture perfect around. Nestled in the Austrian hills, the tiny city is a haven for all things festive and if you’re lucky, you might even get snow on the ground.
A quintessential part of embracing the Christmas market spirit is to order a glu wein (mulled wine) or hot cider to warm your belly and your hands. You can also try a traditional Austrian festive drink and tastes a bit like warm, alcoholic custard!
As for food, you won’t go hungry. Curried wursts - large German style sausages - are a staple and you’ll find them served in both the restaurants and from adorable wooden huts. If it’s not your thing, try raclette instead. Hot, Swiss cheese melted over steaming potatoes with pickled relish.
The stalls sell thousands of decorations, ornaments, gifts and sweet treats like gingerbread. There’s also an open air ice rink in the centre of the square flanked by beautiful mountains and the dazzling twinkly lights of the market stalls which makes for a postcard worthy festive experience guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit.
