India pt 3. - Jaipur

The Pink City

Day 4: Delhi-Jaipu

Get a train from the main station of Delhi to Jaipur, Rajasthan. It will take roughly 5 hours so you might want to book first class tickets (still extremely cheap, air conditioned and much less crowded).

Welcome to the land of the most gorgeous textiles, clothing and jewellery. Definitely save your shopping money for here! But practice your bargaining skills and learn to be firm or you’ll end up spending a lot more than you should be on things you might not even want. The shop owners can be very forceful in India.

Take a walk through the old Jaipur which is surrounded by a stunning coral coloured wall with beautiful detail. It stretches 2 square km around the 300 year old city otherwise known as “the pink city” due to the colour of all the buildings. You’ll see never ending handmade clothing, jewellery and home wares as far as the eye can see. Everything is so inexpensive making it way to difficult not to buy anything!

Find the Wind fort or Hawa Mahal, a gorgeous monument with over 900 windows, where women of the royal families used to look out and watch all the festivities.

Day 5: Jaipur

Amber fort Palace- a beautiful fort with cobblestones paths, extremely detailed walls and the famous “mirror house”, all of which were constructed entirely by hand in 1592. Located about 11km away from Jaipur, you can get here by bus or auto rickshaw and see gorgeous elephants carrying tourists up the hill. Rather take the scenic 10 minute walk though, because the elephants aren’t treated very well. The emperor of Jaipur named Maharaj, his 33 wives and 350 mistresses all lived here back in the 16th century. All the stories and seeing the rooms in which they lived was just incredible.

Stop at a block printing factory if you can find one, they are so awesome (you might find it less intersting, but I studied textile design so I was in my element).

Move on to Pt. 4 to read more!
