Hallgrimskirkja

Reykjavik’s iconic Church

One of Reykjavik’s most popular sights is Hallgrimskirkja- the famous church. This difficult-to-pronounce church is located in the center of the town, and it’s hard to miss with its 244-foot tower looming over the entire city! Although the church might not be as classically beautiful as some other European cathedrals, it is certainly unique. You can visit the inside of the church, but its main attraction is the spire.

Its spire is one of the tallest points in the city, so it is a great place to visit to get an incredible view of Reykjavik! I went at sunrise one morning when I was visiting Iceland (which was around 9 AM at opening time during the dead of winter). You can take an elevator to the top of the tower to see amazing views of the city below. I loved seeing the city covered in snow and watching the sunrise light up the buildings.

You can even see the ocean and the mountains in the distance! It cost about 900 ISK (or around $8) to go to the top of the church, and I think t was totally worth it. Grab a cinnamon roll from nearby Braud & Co (an absolutely delicious bakery) after you visit Hallgrimskirkja!
