The Best Greek Island You Never Heard Of
Koufonisia, Greece
Gorgeous clear blue waters, hidden beaches, amazing food, with not too many tourists, Koufonisia is the ultimate Greek Island paradise. Located in the windswept Cyclades, Koufonisia is a small island with only 365 full-time inhabitants, and is only accessible by a short ferry ride via Santorini, Mykonos or Naxos.
The best beaches for sunbathing and swimming were Fanos, Italida and Finikia. All beaches are in walking distance to each other, since they majority are connected by the same beach path. The clearest blue water, rivaling anything in the Caribbean, super soft sand and most importantly they never felt crowded. Fanos and Finikia beach are perfect for families and tend to be the most populated. Italida beach, the crowd is a bit more sophisticated with fewer kids. There is a fantastic Taverna at the end of Fanos beach, perfect for a Greek Salad and a local beer, maybe an Alpha. Another amazing beach excursion, is a walk to Devil’s Eye. A hollow rock that fills up with sea water to form a natural pool. Dive in yourself, or just watch others brave enough to take a plunge, jump in one by one.
Sometimes the beat beaches are not actually beaches but small rocky coves.
The swimming is amazing as the water is never rough. The clear and salty water makes it easy to float and wade for hours. in addition to hidden coves there a vast sandy beaches as well. All close to Taverna’s where you can great authentic Greek food!
