Driving through Crete
The first thing you should know about driving in Crete is that it is the largest island in Greece. Not only is it large, but also quite long, which makes driving from one side of the island to the other an undertaking. But it's totally worth it - Crete has some of the most varied landscapes around, which make it the perfect place for road trips. You will be driving along beautiful beaches and scenic mountains at the same time. And the best part is the roads are not congested at all so you will pretty much know exactly how long it will take you to get to your destination.
Now, why would you want to drive around Crete? The main attractions in Crete are split between the Eastern and Western parts of the island. In the East you have the historical Heraklion and the luxury hotels of Agios Nikolaos area, and in the West you have the beautiful Setian Limania, Balos Beach and Elafounisi Beach. It’s the most effective way to travel between the two.
We learned this the hard way as we stayed at the beautiful Daios Cove Resort near Agios Nikolaos but planned to visit the beaches near Chania. We did have a really fun road trip though and got to stop at a few unique spots along the way. Check out La Playa taverna for some delicious Greek food with an amazing beach view, or stop by Rethimno or Bali town to enjoy picturesque views.
