Lost and Never Found in Naxos
Naxos, Greece
I always prefer to hang out with locals instead of with tourists when I travel. That's why I asked a Greek friend of mine where do Greeks go in Greece where they are on vacation. He said: 'I'll tell you only if you promise me that you won't share it with anybody else. The secret is Naxos'. I'm sorry Kostas, but I needed to share this gem with other travel enthusiasts!
Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades, kind of windy (perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing) and less visited by tourists and giant cruises, which helps with keeping its authenticity and strong Greek character. We took a direct ferry from Athens to Chora (the biggest town in Naxos with amazing archeological ruins) and we rented a beach villa in Agia Anna Beach, next to Plaka. From there, we explored the small villages of the countryside and also the South-Western coast of the island.
My favorite sites would be the white sandy beach of Kastraki (with crystal clear water, peaceful atmosphere and only 10 miles from Chora) and the famous Mikri Vigla, which consists of two wonderful sandy beaches separated by an impressive hill. The Northern beach is an internationally famous kitesurfing destination and the Southern beach (protected from the wind) is more suitable for families and people in a chill-out mood.
