Kodachadri Trek – Where Forest Trails Meet Ancient Legends in the Heart of Karnataka
Kodachadri Trek, a breathtaking adventure nestled deep within the Western Ghats of Karnataka.

Have you ever felt the thrill of walking into a cloud, or watched golden sunlight pierce through layers of thick rainforest? That’s the magic of the Kodachadri Trek, a breathtaking adventure nestled deep within the Western Ghats of Karnataka. This isn’t just a trail—it’s a journey through ancient hills, sacred stories, and raw natural beauty.
Located in the Shimoga district, Kodachadri is one of those rare treks that offers the perfect mix of mythology, dense jungle, waterfalls, ridge walks, and a soul-stirring view from the summit. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a curious first-timer, this trail has something for everyone.
What Makes Kodachadri Trek Truly Special?
Standing tall at 1,343 meters, Kodachadri is among Karnataka’s highest peaks, nestled within the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s believed that Adi Shankaracharya meditated at the peak, where the Sarvajna Peetha now sits. You’ll even find a tiny stone temple at the top, often blanketed in mist, making the place feel otherworldly.
But beyond the spiritual stories, Kodachadri is a dream for nature lovers. The trail is filled with shola forests, vast meadows, and rocky paths. It feels like you’re walking through multiple ecosystems in a single day. And at the summit? A 360-degree view of the Western Ghats, and on a clear day, even the distant shimmer of the Arabian Sea.
How to Reach Kodachadri
Getting to Kodachadri is an adventure in itself. The base village, Nittur, is about 400–420 km from Bangalore. Here's how you can reach:
By Bus: Take an overnight KSRTC or private bus to Kollur or Shimoga, then hire a local jeep or taxi to reach Nittur or Kattinahole (the usual start point).
By Car: If you're driving from Bangalore, head towards Shimoga – Hosanagara – Nittur. The roads are decent, but the last stretch to the forest gate can be bumpy.
By Train: Nearest railway stations are Shimoga or Byndoor. From there, continue by road.
Pro tip: Plan to reach early in the morning, freshen up at a homestay, and start the trek before the sun gets too strong.
The Trek Route: Forests, Falls, and Ridgelines
There are a couple of ways to trek to Kodachadri peak, but the classic route from Kattinahole via Hidlumane Falls is the most rewarding.
We began our trek around 8:30 AM, after a simple breakfast at our homestay. The trail started with a gentle walk through paddy fields and villages, slowly merging into dense forest. The real test began when we reached the Hidlumane Falls section—a steep, rocky ascent with water cascading down, making it slippery but thrilling.
After crossing the falls, we moved into thick rainforest, where sunlight barely touched the ground. The air was damp, filled with the scent of wild leaves and distant rains. The forest slowly gave way to meadows, where the trail got steeper, but the views became more rewarding.
The final stretch involved a rocky ridge walk with winds howling and clouds swirling around us. After 5–6 hours of trekking, we finally reached the summit. The Sarvajna Peetha, the tiny stone shrine, stood peacefully amidst the mist. All the effort suddenly felt worth it.
Best Time to Visit Kodachadri Trek
October to February is the best season to trek here. The weather is cool, the skies clearer, and the post-monsoon greenery still lingers.
Monsoon (June–September): The trail turns into a lush rainforest, but also gets slippery and infested with leeches. It’s beautiful but challenging.
Summer (March–May): Trekking is possible, but it can get quite hot, especially in the open meadows.
We went in early November, and it was absolutely perfect—green landscapes, cool breeze, and just enough mist to keep the mystery alive.
Stay Options, Budget & Safety Tips
Stay options are mostly homestays in Nittur, Sampekatte, or Kollur. These are usually clean, basic, and come with delicious home-cooked meals. Many homestays also help arrange guides, forest permits, and even packed lunches.
Trek Budget (per person):
Travel (Bangalore to base and back): ₹1,200–₹1,500
Homestay with meals: ₹800–₹1,000 per night
Forest entry guide fee: ₹200–₹400
Jeep ride (if descending via jeep road): ₹300–₹500
Safety & Essentials:
Carry 1.5–2L of water, energy snacks, and a rain jacket.
Wear trekking shoes with good grip—especially near the waterfalls.
No mobile network after base village—inform someone of your plan.
Forest leeches are common during monsoon—wear long socks and carry salt.
A guide is highly recommended unless you’re trekking in a large, experienced group. The trail can get confusing, especially in fog.
