looking for a weekend escape from Bangalore, or a soulful mountain experience that’s off the mainstream radar—Kodachadri

Soulful Trek to Kodachadri in the Western Ghats

If you’re the kind of traveler who finds joy in misty trails, ancient temples, and panoramic mountain views, then Kodachadri Trek is your calling. Nestled in the heart of Karnataka’s Western Ghats, Kodachadri isn’t just a trek—it’s a spiritual journey wrapped in lush greenery, history, and the thrill of conquering one of the most scenic peaks in South India. I recently took on this trail with nothing but a backpack, a group of friends, and the promise of adventure—and it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling treks I’ve ever done. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own unforgettable Kodachadri experience.

Why Trek to Kodachadri?

Kodachadri stands tall at around 1,343 meters (4,406 feet) and is the 10th highest peak in Karnataka. It’s located in the Shimoga district, inside the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. What makes this trek special isn’t just the view from the summit—it’s the path that leads you there. You hike through dense tropical forests, splash through small streams, pass charming meadows, and even stumble upon a hidden Hidlumane Falls—yes, you can take a dip!

But Kodachadri is more than just nature—it’s deeply rooted in mythology. The peak is believed to be where Goddess Mookambika performed penance, and the trek culminates at a small temple dedicated to her. It’s a place where clouds meet earth, and faith meets adventure.

Trekking Routes and Experience

There are multiple routes to reach the Kodachadri peak, but the most popular ones are:

  1. From Nittur Village via Hidlumane Falls – This is the most scenic and adventurous route. You start the trek from Nittur, hike through farmlands, climb slippery rocks near the falls, and ascend the ridge to reach the peak. It’s about 11–13 km one way and ideal for those seeking a raw, challenging experience.

  2. Jeep Route via Kattinahole or Sampekatte – If you’re short on time or not up for a strenuous hike, you can take a rugged jeep ride up most of the mountain and then trek the last 2 km. But honestly, the trek is the soul of the journey.

I chose the Nittur route and it took us about 5–6 hours to reach the peak, including a relaxed stop at Hidlumane Falls. The trail gets steep and rocky near the end, but every step rewards you with mist-covered hills, chirping birds, and the occasional monkey stealing a snack.

Best Time to Visit Kodachadri

The ideal time to trek Kodachadri is between September and February, just after the monsoon when the forests are lush, the waterfalls are alive, and the weather is cool and clear. Avoid peak monsoons (June to August) unless you're an experienced trekker—heavy rains make the trail slippery and tough to navigate. Summer months (March to May) can get quite hot and tiring.

I trekked in mid-October, and the weather was perfect—cloudy with cool breeze, a slight drizzle now and then, and breathtaking views at the summit.

How to Reach Kodachadri

Nearest Towns and Access Points:

  • Nittur or Sampekatte are the common base villages for the trek.

  • The nearest major town is Kollur (around 20 km away), which is also home to the famous Mookambika Temple.

  • From Bangalore, Kodachadri is about 410 km, and from Mangalore, it’s roughly 170 km.

By Road: Overnight buses from Bangalore to Kollur or Nittur are available, or you can drive down via Shimoga. The roads are scenic but get patchy closer to the base.

By Train: You can take a train to Shimoga or Byndoor, and hire a cab from there to the base village.

Local Tip: Stay overnight in Nittur or Sampekatte to start the trek early in the morning and avoid afternoon heat or fog at the summit.

Where to Stay and What to Pack

There are basic homestays in Nittur and Sampekatte, many of which offer food, guides, and jeep transport if needed. I stayed in a cozy homestay with a traditional Karnataka-style meal (hot sambar rice never tasted better after a trek!).

Packing List Essentials:

  • Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip

  • Poncho or light rain jacket (weather changes fast)

  • Refillable water bottles (there are streams but carry enough)

  • Snacks, energy bars, ORS

  • Light woolen for evenings

  • Power bank and torch

What You’ll See: The Highlights of the Trail

Hidlumane Falls – This hidden gem is the highlight of the lower trail. You’ll need to scramble over rocks and jungle paths to reach it, but the reward is a pristine waterfall where you can bathe and rest before continuing the climb.

Viewpoints – There are multiple open ridge points where you’ll see waves of hills fading into mist. It’s the kind of view that reminds you how small we are—and how beautiful nature is.

Sunset at the Peak – If you time it right, catching the sunset at Kodachadri summit is unreal. The sky turns gold and pink, the wind howls through the trees, and the world below feels a lifetime away.

Sarvajna Peetha Temple – This tiny stone structure at the top is believed to be where Adi Shankaracharya meditated. It’s not just a summit—it’s a sacred space.

Tips, Budget & Safety

  • Guides are highly recommended, especially if taking the forest trail via Hidlumane. The path isn’t always marked and it’s easy to get lost.

  • Cost-wise, expect to spend ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person for transport, food, stay, and a guide—budget-friendly and totally worth it.

  • Stay hydrated, respect the forest, and don’t litter. Mobile signal is weak in most places, so let someone know your plan in advance.

  • If you’re trekking down after sunset, carry a flashlight—it gets really dark.

Final Thoughts: Why Kodachadri Stays With You

Kodachadri isn’t just a trek you check off your list—it’s a journey you carry with you. It tests your legs, clears your mind, and fills your heart. Whether you’re an adventure junkie or a spiritual seeker, this trail has something for everyone. The mountain speaks in rustling leaves and rolling clouds. And if you listen closely, you’ll find your own story in its silence.

So if you’re looking for a weekend escape from Bangalore, or a soulful mountain experience that’s off the mainstream radar—Kodachadri Trek is waiting.
