Bandaje Falls Trek – A Thrilling Adventure into the Western Ghats

Trekking has always been my escape from the mundane. When I first heard about Bandaje Falls Trek, I knew I had to experience it. Nestled deep in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, this hidden gem promised breathtaking views, a challenging trail, and the majestic waterfall as the grand reward.

The journey was nothing short of exhilarating. The dense forests, undulating trails, and panoramic landscapes made every step worth it. If you’re seeking an offbeat adventure, Bandaje Falls Trek is a must-visit.

Reaching the starting point is an adventure in itself. The trek begins at Mundaje, a small village near Ujire in Karnataka.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport, about 110 km away.

  • By Train: The closest railway station is in Mangalore. From there, you can take a bus or hire a cab.

  • By Road: Ujire is well-connected to major cities like Bangalore and Mangalore. From Ujire, you can take a local transport or drive to the trek base at Mundaje.

Once at the base, be prepared for an uphill climb through thick forests and steep inclines.

The Bandaje Falls Trek is a moderate to difficult trail stretching over 12 km one way. The trek offers an exciting mix of terrains, from dense forests to open grasslands.

  • Initial Stretch: The trek starts through thick forests filled with towering trees, chirping birds, and refreshing streams. The dense canopy provides a cool shade, making the first leg pleasant.

  • Midway Challenge: As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper, demanding endurance. Slippery paths and sudden clearings give way to stunning views of the rolling hills.

  • Final Stretch: The last stretch is through an open grassland, with mesmerizing views of the Western Ghats. You can hear the distant roar of the waterfall, fueling your motivation to reach the top.

The moment you arrive at Bandaje Falls, the sight is truly magical. The gushing waters cascade from over 200 feet, forming a misty veil against the rocks.

Timing plays a crucial role in experiencing the trek at its best.

  • Post-Monsoon (September to February): The waterfall is in full glory, and the weather is pleasant.

  • Summer (March to May): The trek becomes challenging due to the heat, but the clear skies offer spectacular views.

  • Monsoon (June to August): Not recommended, as heavy rains make the trail slippery and risky.

Preparation is key to a successful trek. Here’s a checklist of essentials:

  • Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip

  • Lightweight backpack with ample water supply

  • Energy bars and snacks for quick refueling

  • Raincoat or poncho (if trekking during unpredictable weather)

  • First-aid kit and essential medicines

  • Power bank and flashlight

Camping near the falls is not officially permitted, but you can set up camps in designated areas along the trail. Alternatively, you can stay in Ujire or nearby homestays offering a rustic experience.

For those seeking a weekend escape filled with adventure and nature, Bandaje Falls Trek is an ideal choice. The sheer beauty of the falls, combined with the challenging trail, makes it a trekker’s paradise.
