Chopta Trek Experience – A Journey to the Mini Switzerland of India

I had heard about Chopta being called the Mini Switzerland of India, but experiencing it firsthand was something else! The journey through lush meadows, dense forests, and mesmerizing views of the snow-clad Himalayas made this trek unforgettable. The peacefulness of Chopta, combined with the thrill of reaching Tungnath and Chandrashila, made it one of the most rewarding treks I’ve ever done.

I planned my trek in April, and it was an amazing choice! The weather was perfect, with blooming rhododendrons and clear skies. The best time to visit Chopta depends on what you’re looking for:

  • March to May: Pleasant weather, clear skies, and lush green landscapes.

  • September to November: Crisp autumn views with stunning golden hues.

  • December to February: Snow-covered trails for those who love winter trekking.

Reaching Chopta was an adventure in itself! I took an overnight bus from Delhi to Rishikesh, then a scenic drive via Devprayag and Rudraprayag to reach Chopta. The drive was long but breathtaking, with river confluences and towering peaks accompanying the journey.

Here’s how my journey unfolded:

  • After a long but scenic drive, I reached Chopta, a quaint village nestled in the Himalayas.

  • The crisp mountain air and peaceful environment made me feel refreshed instantly.

  • I spent the evening exploring the nearby trails and watching a mesmerizing sunset.

  • The 4 km trek to Tungnath was steep but stunning, with rhododendron forests and snowy peaks in view.

  • As I reached Tungnath Temple (12,073 ft), the spirituality of the place gave me goosebumps.

  • The temple, covered in mist, looked mystical, and the peaceful atmosphere made it a magical experience.

  • After seeking blessings, I continued my climb to Chandrashila Peak.

  • The final stretch to Chandrashila (13,123 ft) was a bit challenging, but the views were worth every step!

  • Standing at the summit, I had a 360-degree panoramic view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath peaks.

  • The feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming—I had never felt more connected to nature.

  • After soaking in the views, I trekked back down to Chopta and later headed towards Sari village to visit Deoria Tal.

Packing the right gear made my trek comfortable. Here’s what I carried:

  • Clothing: Layered clothing for cold weather, thermal wear, gloves, and a waterproof jacket.

  • Shoes: Good-quality trekking shoes with a solid grip.

  • Accessories: Trekking pole, sunglasses, flashlight, and power bank.

  • Essentials: Water bottle, dry snacks, first aid kit, and sunscreen.

The Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila trek is moderately easy, making it perfect for beginners. However, the steep climb to Chandrashila can be challenging. To prepare, I did some light cardio and leg-strengthening exercises a few weeks before the trek. The key is to take it slow, stay hydrated, and enjoy the journey!

The Chopta trek was more than just a hike—it was an experience of tranquility, adventure, and spiritual bliss. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a beginner looking for a breathtaking adventure, Chopta is a must-visit! The combination of Tungnath’s spirituality, Chandrashila’s unmatched views, and the untouched beauty of Chopta made this trek one of the most memorable journeys of my life.
