Tucked away in the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir, the Tarsar Marsar Trekis one of India’s most enchanting high-altitude treks. This trek takes adventurers through lush meadows, sparkling alpine lakes, and pristine valleys that showcase Kashmir’s unmatched natural beauty. My journey through this picturesque terrain was nothing short of a dream, with every step bringing me closer to nature’s finest creations.
The trek starts from Aru Valley, which is around 12 km from Pahalgam, a famous hill station in Kashmir. To get there:
By Air: The nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport, about 115 km from Aru Valley.
By Rail: The closest railway station is in Jammu, from where you can take a bus or taxi to Srinagar and then Aru Valley.
By Road: Regular taxis and buses operate from Srinagar to Pahalgam and further to Aru Valley.
The ideal time to embark on this trek is between June and September when the weather is pleasant, the meadows are lush, and the lakes remain accessible.
The trek begins from Aru Valley, a scenic meadow surrounded by pine forests. A moderate 10 km trek through lush landscapes leads to Lidderwat, where the views of the Lidder River flowing alongside create a perfect camping experience.
The trail ascends through green pastures, crossing wooden bridges and alpine flowers, finally leading to Shekwas. The dramatic landscapes and distant snow-capped peaks make this a visually stunning stretch.
One of the most awaited moments of the trek is reaching Tarsar Lake, a mesmerizing alpine lake encircled by rugged mountains. The reflection of the blue sky on its pristine waters is a sight to behold. Camping beside the lake under a star-lit sky was an experience I will cherish forever.
A thrilling and slightly challenging trek leads to Marsar Lake, the twin of Tarsar. Surrounded by mist and hidden within the mountains, Marsar exudes a mystical charm. Due to its unpredictable weather, visiting it early in the morning is ideal.
The return journey takes a different route, passing through Sundersar Lake and offering another perspective of Kashmir’s surreal beauty before finally descending to Aru Valley.
