Top5 Greek islands to see before you die
Below you will find our top five Greek islands that should be on every avid world traveler’s bucket list. Read now, thank us later.
1) Whitewashed Mykonos
The playground of elite jet-setters, Mykonos is our favourite Greek island by far. Whether you come here for the parties, the luxurious life, or just to relax, you won’t be bored. The whole place is extremely charming – from its white washed buildings and narrow cobblestone streets to the famous windmills, little Venice and countless secret spots to explore with an ATV.
TIP: Come in the summer during the main season for the best weather and main events.
2) Clifftop Santorini
Santorini is one of the most visited places in the world. Tourists arrive here in droves. A local told us that about 65 planes, 6-9 cruise ships (each carrying up to 15,000 people) and countless ferries arriving EACH day. You do the math! Yes, it can be pretty overwhelming and you should be prepared for it, but there are corners that exist where you can find some solitude. On our last trip to Santorini we were able to witness a proposal on top of Skaros Rock which happens to be one of our fave locations on this island. There are numerous churches, villages, and beaches to enjoy. Make sure you walk along the hillside steps that overlook the most amazing views of the deep blue Aegean sea.
3) Crystalline Crete
Crete is a place everyone must experience! We discovered so many pleasant things during our trip there. Our best discovery was the Mediterranean diet, and how amazing it is! With a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and notably olive oil, with moderate amounts of fresh seafood you begin to understand why the Cretans are so happy and healthy! Head to my “Top 5 reasons to visit Crete” story on Hero Traveler – I wrote great tips on what to do while traveling there!
4) Party capital of Cyclades - Ios
Ios quickly made it to the top of best islands we have ever visited. It is a Greek island you NEED visit – Offering a wide variety of beaches, hidden cliff jumping points, hiking trails, cinematic sunset viewpoints, ruins, churches, shopping, and so much more. Rent your own boat and enjoy a scenic day on the water. Trust me, there will never be a dull moment here.
5) Lunarscape Milos
With a landscape unlike any other, Milos is without a doubt a truly unique island. It is very quiet and highly recommended for those that want to get some peace and quiet and indulge in an amazing landscape. I wrote more on where to go and what not to miss in my “3 greek islands you've never heard about” story. Check it out!
