Ayutthaya
Day trip to the historical park from Bangkok
Now a UNESCO heritage site, Ayutthaya was once a bustling Capital City of Thailand, responsible for most of its trade! Situated by rivers that link to the sea, it makes a picturesque setting for the temples and was ideally situated for carrying out trade.
Despite the success & wealth of Ayutthaya between 14th & 18th century, the Kingdom eventually came to an end in 1765 when the Burmese invaded the city & set the temples alight, creating the ruins that stand today.
Getting there
From Bangkok, the trip to Ayutthaya is fairly easy and inexpensive. Skip on renting a motorbike unless you are a seriously confident rider, the roads of Bangkok are pretty terrifying! There are plenty of organised tours to Ayutthaya & your hotel or a taxi could likely arrange one for you, however we’d recommend getting the local train as its so easy & undoubtedly the cheapest option.
From Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station, the route takes 1.5-2 hours and costs just 15THB (0.50$) one way.
Once you arrive at the train station in Ayutthaya the main sites are still a fair distance away as its a relatively big city. You can make your own way around the sites but there fairly spread out so its worth getting a tuk-tuk driver to take you around the top sites. For a 3 hour tour stopping at whatever temples you like, it will cost around 800THB.
The temples & main historical park is located the far side of a river. So heres a tip - cross the river before getting a guide & the tuk-tuk drivers charge less for a tour. Simply follow the signs to the river and pay 5THB per person to cross the river on a small boat.
Each of the temples charges 20-50THB to enter so carry some small change around with you & remember to cover up whilst visiting as you wont be allowed to enter with skin showing - you will be able to rent Sarongs & funky trousers for around 30THB each place so it doesn't matter too much if you're not covered up unless youre on a strict budget.
