Just a short drive from the tourist hotspots of Chaweng and The Fisherman’s Village on the Thai holiday island of Koh Samui, you’ll find the the iconic Big Buddha statue. Situated on a small peninsular, this is one of the most famous things to see on the island and dominates the local skyline.
The large statue is at the top of a dramatic, wide staircase and is free to visit, though there are donation boxes. At the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding idyllic bays of Koh Samui or marvel at the size of the Big Buddha close up. The statue is surrounded by smaller Buddha’s and figurines, each intricately carved and painted. There are also shrines where, for a donation, you can receive a blessing from a monk.
There’s plenty of parking for motorbikes and cars as well as lots of different shops and stalls as the area has become more and more tourist-centric. The best time to visit is in the morning when it’s quieter and the weather is cooler. Big Buddha is located a short drive from Wat Plai Laem, so it’s definitely worth coinciding a visit there as well.
