Wat Plai Laem, Koh Samui
Beautiful temple complex on Koh Samui

Wat Plai Laem is an incredibly tranquil and astonishingly intricate series of vibrant Buddhist temples on the Thai island of Koh Samui. Most visitors flock to the neighbouring Big Buddha statue but often overlook, or are simply unaware of, Wat Plai Laem.
I would go as far as to say that this is the most stunning temple I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Built in the Chinese Thai style, Wat Plai Laem features two large, imposing and incredibly vibrant statues. The first depicts Guanyin, a goddess with eighteen arms and the second, the fat, laughing Chinese Buddha.
The main temple building was only competed in 2004 but holds the prestige and awe of it’s much older predecessors across Thailand. Surrounded by a calm lake, the temple appears to be floating on lily pads. Inside, the detailed, brightly coloured paintings on the walls and ceilings depict stories and scenes.
There’s lots to see here and thankfully, it doesn't seem to get too busy (though it’s always worth visiting early, especially in the high season). Don’t forget to dress appropriately, covering your shoulders and knees. Scarves are available free of charge.
