Sydney’s mountain escape

The impressive world heritage Blue Mountains offer a scenic escape from nearby Sydney and plunge you into an ancient world of dense forest, cascading waterfalls and incredible viewpoints. An absolute must if you’re visiting Australia’s New South Wales.
The mountain region is definitely best explored with your own transport as this gives you the opportunity to go to a number of different places and experiencing the isolation of the mountains without other visitors. However, there are plenty of tours available if you don't drive.
The Blue Mountains were gifted their name by the blue haze created by surrounding Eucalyptus forests; the impact is stunning as you travel towards the region. The pretty village of Katoomba is the central hub of the mountains and it’s just a short journey from here to the most famous viewpoint; the Three Sisters. Getting here early is a must as you will be rewarded by uninterrupted views before the tour groups arrive.
Venture outside the guide books and make your way to Pulpit Rock; a beautiful lookout with vast reaching views down a flight of carved stairs. You’re unlikely to meet any other tourists here so you can shout into the mountains as loud as you please!
The region also gives opportunities to adventurous rock climbers, hikes of varying lengths and the rather more sedate Scenic World cable car, which offers stunning views and provides a link to the steepest passenger railway in the world.
