New Zealand’s Wild West Coast is filled with some of the most incredible landscape in all of New Zealand. A few notable stops include the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. You can take a helicopter tour or guided tour to walk on the glacier. You can also take the Fox Glacier Valley Walk to the foot of the glacier.
Hokitika Gorge boasts vibrant turquoise glacier water, thick forests, a swing bridge and cliff jumping if you’re brave enough to swim in the frigid water!
The Pancake Rocks are a natural wonder. The unique stacked rocks resemble pancakes. If you visit at high tide you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular show at the blowhole.
Truman’s Track is located near the Pancake Rocks. The scenic trail leads through native bush down to a secluded beach. You’ll find a waterfall cascading off the cliffs and cool sea caves to explore.
The Pororari River Track is also located near the Pancake Rocks. The riverside trail leads alongside the river next to towering limestone cliffs and jungles. It has a very prehistoric feel as you traverse through untouched beauty. Kayaks are also available to rent.
The Cave Creek Track is also a great hike on the West Coast. The easy 2 mile trail starts out in grasslands then descends inta a dry creek bed where you’ll be transported to the heart of the jungle. It leads to a cool river cave to explore. Just don’t visit when it is raining as it is prone to flash flooding.
The Great Coast Road along New Zealand’s West Coast was rated as one of the top 10 most scenic coastal drives in the entire world by Lonely Planet. It is a breathtaking stretch of road from Greymouth to Westport and worth a drive!
Cape Foulwind is found near Westport at the northern end of the Great Coast Road. It is home to a seal colony, walking track and a beautiful lighthouse. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try cave rafting through the nearby expansive Nile River Cave system.
