Marrakech - a Gem of Morocco
2019 // Morocco
Morocco is extremeley diverse in local cultures, architecture, smells, sounds and everything else you could think of honestly! Marrakech is no exception to this, and along with Chefchaouen I would have to say it is my favorite city. I know a lot of people that didn’t enjoy Marrakech all too much because they felt that the Medina was a bit too tight and pushy, but that is the beauty of it! It definitely can get really busy and tight, and there are a lot of people who want you to buy their home made goods, spices, lamps, décor, etc. but that just adds to the beauty of it. It is these things, in my opinion, that shape the very culture and liveliness of the city!
Marrakech is probably best known for 2 things, it’s array of craftsmanship and it’s Riads. All around the medina you will hear industrial sounds of copper being shaped with hammers, other metals being welded, furniture being made – and you will see this happen right in the middle of these small narrow maze-like streets. This can be quite overwhelming but it is so beautiful to see how it just works – there is no need for factories or mass-production, it is all such a personalised approach being taken and the work that come out of it is incredible!
Walking through the riad you will see an array of handcrafted lamps and other decorative designs that light up the entire Medina, and this is complemented by the many stalls selling herbs, spices, homemade soaps, dyed fabrics, etc! More or less an explosion of color everywhere! The architecture in Marrakech is perfectly in line with the rest of the aesthetic culture, and they make that all work with their incredible seleciton of Riads!
For those who don’t know, Riads are basically small boutique hotels that almost seem like they were designed for photographers to come and have a great time there! They are typically decorated in light colours and mozaic tile work! The craziest thing is that you would never expect them to be around because they are all hidden in small streets and look like nothing special from outside, but as soon as you step in its like an oasis in a desert!
Overall I love Marrakech, I have been there 3 times this year and I will definitely be returning again!
Tip: avoid visitting in the month of Ramadan, as the liveliness of the city is flipped upside down and you really have no idea when things will be open and it would be a shame to miss the sights of the Medina in all of its glory!
